NATE HILL

We sat down with photographer and digital artist Nate Hill to ask him a few questions.

How did you get started in photography?

I started in school and studied it for a short time at University. Even got to learn the dark arts of the darkroom. It was a hobby (that I was passionate about) for the longest time, but grew into something I do professionally largely due to Instagram and social media.

 Your best moment/s shooting?

I love a wide range of ‘moments’ and styles of shooting for different reasons. I love shooting live music. It’s challenging and chaotic, but it’s a rush and a thrill when you capture a perfect shot/moment at a gig. There’s something satisfying and peaceful about shooting landscapes by yourself. And I also like shooting portraits…

Your challenges?

I’m not a very technically proficient photographer. I certainly know my way around my camera, but I’m very much a look and feel kind of shooter…

I would also like to improve my skills in a studio setting and have a better understanding of lighting in that situation.

Your ultimate shoot?

I’ve been fortunate enough to shoot some of my favourite bands over the past couple of years. I’d love to check more of those bucket list bands off the list.

Another dream would be to go and shoot in Iceland. (That’s every photographers dream though isn't it?!)

Your inspirations?

So many! I’m not someone who has looked back at the history of photography much at all, so it would be all modern photographers and peers in the industry. With social media the way it is, it’s so easy to find and follow amazing artists. But at the same time, it can be a little overwhelming too.

I’m going to struggle to make a list (and it wouldn't be just photographers, but digital artists, etc too…), so I’ll just say that if I'm following you on Insta or Facebook there’s a good chance i’m taking some inspiration from you.

Your favourite photo?

It’s a bit like having a favourite child isn't it?!? I don’t think I could pick just one. I have a bunch of my daughter that I absolutely love (and people commenting on them is part of the reason I got serious about my photography). I have some landscapes I’m fond probably more for sentimental reasons rather than technical or aesthetic reasons. I’m pretty proud of some of my live music shots. And I have some digital art and photo manipulations that I love as well… Sorry…

Your present?

I’m currently working on my next exhibition that will involve my digital art and my own music too. I don’t want to give away too much, but I’m hoping that it will be ready to show early next year…

Outside of that, it’s shooting gigs for online publications and making art for bands and myself…

Your future?

I love the balance of what I’m doing as a freelancer at the moment. I love working with bands on the visual side of things. So more album covers, promo shoots and video clips would be great.
